About this bathing spot

“Even the Aare would, if it could, make a bigger detour around Olten,” once ran a carnival newspaper headline. In fact, that would be a pity. The closeness to the water is not the only thing that gives Olten’s old town its charm; without the river, the large swimming pool would also have become an ordinary outdoor pool. So it may call itself a “Strandbad”, even though the term is rarely used. The bathing complex was built from 1936 to 37 to plans by Hermann Frey and Ernst Schindler. Like ships in a river harbour, the buildings of the Oltner Badi sit at the western end of the old town. The buildings have two storeys, and on the sun decks with their porthole windows, you feel almost as if you were on a ship in the open sea.
