About this place

Art meets a place that carries history in itself. The «art ufnau» takes place in a place that is unique in Switzerland in this form. Set in the middle of Lake Zurich and shaped by nature and culture, spirituality and history, the monastery island of Ufnau is a place that invites you to pause for a moment and take a break from everyday life. In the Benedictine tradition, pausing and meeting come together here. This special atmosphere also shapes the encounter with art. The works do not enter a neutral exhibition space, but a grown environment: light, sounds, weather and the season all become part of the experience. Here, art is not only viewed, but experienced in interplay with place and time. Under the theme «Zeitraum», the works by Carlo Borer, Carla Hohmeister and Beate Frommelt, Pius Morger and Micha Aregger take up this dialogue. They respond to the island’s conditions and open up different approaches to space, time and perception. The exhibition unfolds while walking, lingering and meeting. Conversations with the artists, guided tours and learning activities for families and school classes provide deeper insights with interesting background information. This year’s art ufnau theme is embedded in the anniversary year of Einsiedeln Monastery, «500 years of revival: 1526-2026». Ufnau island is served several times a day by the Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG). It can also be reached in a few minutes by boat taxi, by prior arrangement, from Pfäffikon SZ.
