About this place

The origins of the castle date back to the year 1000. From 1263 it belonged to the Habsburgs, after the Kyburgs. During the conquest of Aargau in 1415 by the Confederates, the castle went up in flames. From 1658 to 1670, the people of Baden once again greatly expanded the complex. In 1712, during the Second Villmergen War, Baden had to demolish the castle under pressure from the victorious Reformed powers of Zurich and Bern. To humiliate the Catholic town of Baden, the Reformed church by today’s Bahnhofplatz was built from the stones of the castle complex. The shortest walking route leads via St.-Niklaus-Stiege to what is probably the finest panoramic view of Baden’s old town and the surrounding vineyards.
