Museum der Landschaft Saanen
About this place
With temporary exhibitions and events on current topics, the museum keeps pace with the present. The historic cellar room with its cobblestone paving beneath a glass floor reveals the history of the house before the village fire of 1575. Domestic culture, handwork and costumes, a smoke kitchen from the 18th century and an original classroom are also themes of the exhibition. Muleteers’ utensils bear witness to lively trading activity, and sharpshooter equipment to military campaigns. Traditional craftsmanship lives on in the pottery and hand weaving of the «Heimatwerk». Silhouettes by Johann Jakob Hauswirth (1808-1871) and chalk discs decorate the museum. The museum also commemorates Yehudi Menuhin, the great musician, conductor and humanist, who was an honorary citizen of the municipality of Saanen.
