Paul Klee often used both sides of the image carrier – paper, cardboard or canvas – when painting and drawing. On around 600 of his 9,600 works in total, drawings, watercolours or paintings can be found on the back. This remarkable phenomenon spans all of the artist’s creative phases. The backs are often more than just a place for discarded ideas. They are part of an open, ongoing creative process in which Klee linked front and back formally, thematically and visually. Die Sammlung offers visitors a chronological overview of Klee’s artistic output and presents around seventy works as well as biographical material and archival documents, which are regularly replaced. In one room, smaller Fokus exhibitions with a thematic connection to Paul Klee and his work are shown in rotation.
