The novel tells the story of two grandmothers, one from a poor Swiss farming family, the other from a wealthy family in Cameroon. In Melara Mvogdobo’s concise, almost chiselled language, it explores the childhood, hopes and disappointments of the two grandmothers. They marry, are humiliated and stripped of dignity.
