Zünd Winery
About this place
Viticulture in the region has a long tradition. More than 100 years ago, Altstätten was the largest wine-growing area in the canton of St. Gallen. In the vineyards of Zünd Winery, you’ll find young vines as well as vines up to 45 years old. Soil, climate and topography are crucial for special wines. They influence the flavour, aromatic depth and balance of sweetness and acidity in the grapes. There is plenty on offer here: around 11 hectares of vineyards are tended on the best vineyard sites in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, between Eichberg and Rebstein. Wine quality depends not only on natural conditions, but also on the winemaker and the cellar master. The region is blessed by the Föhn, the “grape cooker”. The warm, dry wind encourages sugar formation in the grapes. This has a particularly positive effect after the first cold nights in autumn. The vineyards are being planted step by step with PIWI grape varieties, which are less susceptible to powdery and downy mildew. This makes it possible to produce an attractive and sustainable wine. The Maréchal Foch, Muscaris and Divico varieties are already growing in the vineyards. Since 2022, production has also followed organic guidelines. Zünd Winery is a meeting place for local wine culture. Guests can taste the selected wines on site in the vinotheque. Cellar and vineyard tours are also available.
