What it's about
Despite the outrage of conservative church circles, Andrew Llyod Webber's work quickly became a cult musical and an expression of rebellious youth in times of upheaval. Songs such as «I don’t know how to love him» and «Superstar» became major hits beyond the stage too. Music, Love and Action revolve at heart around deep philosophical questions. The rock opera tells the last days in the life of Jesus Christ, with his entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his arrest on Mount Gethsemane, his trial by Pilatus and his crucifixion. Lloyd Webber and Rice thus place themselves in the tradition of the great Passion settings by Bach, Telemann or Schütz in a modern variation. With powerful music, the work addresses timelessly relevant questions: Was Jesus more than a man? Truly the Son of God? Or just a media-made superstar? Was his death solely the fault of the traitor Judas? And is the love affair with Mary Magdalene really unthinkable?
