What it's about

The original score of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor is part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World, alongside the Gutenberg Bible, the Nibelungenlied and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of the French Revolution. Quite rightly, the work is regarded as one of the most universal masterpieces in music history. 18 choral movements, nine arias and the complete Latin text of the Catholic Mass come together here in a monumental composition that can also be read as a kind of musical legacy from Bach. He set movements from earlier cantatas and combined them with new musical material. Bach is said to have worked on this jewel of his sacred music for more than 25 years. The work is likely to hold a special place in the J. S. Bach-Stiftung’s project too. Since 2006, the foundation has performed a Bach cantata every month, with the aim of presenting his entire vocal output within 25 years. Johann Sebastian Bach Mass in B minor (BWV 232) J. S.
