What it's about
Still in the womb, Oskar Matzerath sees the world as a universal disaster into which he does not even want to be born. Only his tin drum offers him an acceptable way to survive: a life as an artist. At the age of three, Oskar decides not to grow any more, but to watch and drum. From a frog’s-eye view, he describes the rise of fascism, linking private history with the history of the times. The novel by the controversial Nobel laureate Günter Grass remains, with its powerful language, grotesque characters and scenes long since lodged in the collective memory of readers, a landmark of German-language literature. The questions to which Oskar must keep finding new answers for himself and on behalf of society are: growing up, yes — and how? Where to? How should the future be shaped? Director Oliver Reese tells the story in a version tailored entirely to the perspective of the main character.
