Micha Friemel presents her first novel – and what a novel. At its centre are Marie and Mattia, whose love story has always been turbulent. By now they are married and have two children. Their arguments become ever more intense; once Marie completely loses control in front of her little daughter. She then flees from herself. She retreats to a mountain village, picks flowers, eats nothing but rice and looks back over her past with Mattia. In her desperate search for a knot that might be untied, she keeps going further back until she reaches her earliest childhood. In her thoughts she holds countless conversations: with Mattia, with real and invented therapists, with literary figures such as Parzival and with the clever Else from the Brothers Grimm. Quite unexpectedly, she finds the key that changes her life fundamentally. A clever, witty novel that, in a playful and tender way, shows why we make life hardest for those we love most of all.
