A year before the end of the Second World War, 16-year-old Marton Stark is taken from the Budapest ghetto to a concentration camp. He survives, more dead than alive. Scarred by typhus and tuberculosis, he comes to Davos to recover, to the Jewish convalescent home Etania. Elise Welti, an office worker with the Red Cross, looks after his mental well-being. At her suggestion, Stark writes his concentration camp diary. Elise Welti is Heinz Bachmann’s great-aunt. In the 1940s, Davos was a cosmopolitan place. In the middle of the 19th century, German doctors had discovered and developed it as a health resort. During and immediately after the Second World War, 15 per cent of the population was therefore of German descent. The mix of people at the time feels slightly surreal: Nazis live next to wounded Allied soldiers, as well as Jewish and other war refugees. Heinz Bachmann from Winterthur finds his mother’s estate the diary of the Romanian Jew Marton Stark. It is a harrowing document of his time in German concentration camps. Bachmann spends several years looking for him and finds him in the USA. Meeting Heinz Bachmann is a joy for Marton Stark, as after decades he once again has his notes in his hands, and they give him back a piece of his long-repressed, traumatic life story.
