The Ballenberg landscape theatre brings Peter Zybach’s gripping story to the stage. As landlord of the Grimsel-Hospiz, he made a significant contribution to the emerging tourism in the Bernese Oberland — and he committed Switzerland’s first insurance fraud. The play is based on true events and gives an insight into the inner conflict of a man who had everything — and lost even more. In the middle of the 19th century, Peter Zybach turns the Grimsel-Hospiz into the first port of call for travellers crossing the pass into Valais. With unyielding determination and visionary pioneering spirit, the Grimsel innkeeper rises to become one of the region’s most influential men. But success comes at a price. Envy, wounded pride and Zybach’s growing greed drive him step by step towards the abyss, until he is forced into a fateful decision that goes down in Swiss history as the first insurance fraud. Simon Burkhalter’s open-air production takes place below the farmhouse from Villars-Bramard VD. For the theatre, an imposing stage complete with Grimsel-Hospiz is built in the middle of the striking landscape of the open-air museum, enabling an effective portrayal of the events surrounding Switzerland’s first insurance fraud. Well-known actors Daniel Bill and Reto Stalder, the large ensemble, music and singing, the unique set and a gripping story guarantee a unique, lively evening at the theatre.
