39th year of the Goppisberg Music Festival and Academy. In 1987, Ms Katharina Hardy, born on 7 November 1928 in Budapest, founded the Goppisberg Music Weeks in the small romantic Valais village of Goppisberg in the Aletsch region for children and young people who take music seriously. Katharina Hardy was guided by the idea of developing and further training the instrumental skills of young talents and all those interested in music, including older musicians, intensively during 3 weeks of summer holidays. In the first years, the music weeks were held in the village of Goppisberg itself, but with a larger number of participants the setting proved too small. The location of the Goppisberg Music Weeks was therefore moved to other places in Upper Valais. The old name remained, as a reference to the early days. Since 1991, the music weeks have taken on an international character. The students come from Switzerland, Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Israel, Italy, Colombia, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Romania, Spain and Hungary. Some teachers also come from these countries. Since 2007, Deborah Spiegel, violin, has been the new artistic director and concertmaster, and Arthur Balogh is the conductor of the academy orchestra. They are supported by their parents Piroska Spiegel Nyffenegger, festival management / organisation, and Bruno Nyffenegger Spiegel, technical director. In 2019, the name Goppisberg Music Weeks was changed to Goppisberg Music Festival and Academy. After 30 years in the canton of Valais and 8 years in the canton of Bern, it now takes place from 19 July to 9 August 2026 for the first time at Hotel Hirschen Wildhaus in the canton of St Gallen.
