Coumba Samba (*2000) explores in her multimedia and performative practice the effects of institutional structures on individual and collective identities and questions dominant cultural narratives. Her works reflect themes such as consumer culture, social dynamics and the intersections of technology and identity, while highlighting the dynamic between mainstream culture and subversive practices. In doing so, she opens up a view of the global web of power and the continuities of colonialism, showing how colonial structures shape the social and political present. Since 1996, the public space has been activated with contemporary art through individual artistic presentations on the outer wall of Kunsthalle Basel. In 2025, Kunsthalle Basel invites the London exhibition space Galerina to curate and host Coumba Samba’s project together.
