Myriam Gämperli’s works link up with a surrealist tradition of arrangement. The playful mix of the recognisable and the unfamiliar creates a charm that characterises her staged scenes. Gämperli creates a space in which hierarchies are questioned, gravity is overcome and bodies are freed from their limits. Most of the time, she stages herself, as hybrid beings or mixed forms of object and subject. Sculptural performance allows her to adopt multiple identities, which unfold across the axes of nature, gender and ideas of beauty. The theatrical sequences are inspired by the artist’s everyday life, which takes place between the urban space of Zürich and the nature of Bettenes SG. Contrasting elements recur in Gämperli’s collages, paintings, installations, performances and dances. They reflect autobiographical experiences: brought up in a hamlet of 75 inhabitants, she has lived in cities such as London, Berlin and Zürich. Her different experiences with marginal groups and subcultures at the intersection of art and custom continue to shape her today.
