Piazza Grande in Locarno was laid out in the 19th century and, at about 190 metres long and 60 metres wide, is one of the most spacious squares in Switzerland. Framed by historic palazzi with arcades, it offers a mix of Italian flair and Ticino lifestyle. The cobblestone paving is particularly striking and gives the square its special charm. By day, weekly markets, cafés and boutiques bring the area to life; in the evening, it becomes a popular meeting place. Piazza Grande is known far beyond the city limits for its major events. Every year, the square turns into a spectacular open-air arena for the Locarno Film Festival, where films are shown under the open sky on a giant screen. At the Moon&Stars music festival, national and international artists perform on a large stage right on the square. Alongside these events, the Piazza also serves as a starting point for city tours, as sights such as Via della Motta with its old town houses or Castello Visconteo are easy to reach on foot from here.
