A sigh that wants to grow into heartache. This quote from Robert Schumann refers to the slow second movement of Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2. This movement is the heart of the trio, an intimate funeral march, wistful, not stormy, but full of deep grief. The first movement, by contrast, is energetic and dramatic. Franz Schubert composed the trio in 1827. That was the time of Winterreise, icy and lonely. You can feel the wanderer. But in the end, melancholy is overcome. At the very last minute. Only Schubert can do that! (Annelies Berger, SRF) Louis Schwizgebel, piano (photo © Marco Borggreve) Born in Geneva in 1987, the pianist won first prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York in 2002. In 2014, his Prokofiev piano concerto was broadcast on television at the BBC Proms. In 2023/24, he toured with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, including at KKL Luzern, with the Tonkünstler-Orchester at the Vienna Musikverein and with the Orchestre national de Metz at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He also performed, for example, with the Orchestre National de France and the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich. As a chamber musician, he has played, among others, with the violinist Renaud Capuçon and the violinist Alina Ibragimova. His discography includes, among others, the recording of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos No. 1 and 2 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Yuuki Wong, violin In 1991, when he was just 9 years old, he was admitted to the Yehudi Menuhin School in London. In 2007, he received first prize at the Summit Music Festival Competition in New York. He has performed, for example, at the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Carnegie Hall, and he played at Buckingham Palace for HM Queen Elizabeth II. He has appeared as soloist, among others, with the Orchestre de chambre de Lausanne and the Singapore Symphony. In 2020, a Mozart album was released on Sony Classical. Lionel Cottet, cello (photo © Niels Ackermann / Lundi13) Born in Geneva in 1987, he is the principal solo cellist of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, a role he previously held with the Bayerischer Rundfunk Orchester. As a soloist, he has performed, among others, at Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Vienna Musikverein. He has also played with the ensemble of the 12 cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He is a prizewinner, among others, of the Lutosławski Cello Competition in Warsaw.
