This concert focuses on works by the contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Gjeilo’s neoclassical compositions enjoy worldwide recognition. His choral works are distinguished by their dense, atmospheric soundscapes, often made up of polyphonic clusters and sustained chords. Gjeilo likes to draw on texts from the Latin church music tradition, which gives his works a timeless and spiritual quality. Alongside Gjeilo, works by Eriks Esenvalds (Latvia) and Eric Whitacre (USA) are also performed, and their compositions are among the highlights of modern choral music. Whitacre, whose style is often described as “neo-impressionist”, creates an aesthetic link with Gjeilo’s music.
