Photo © Nicolas Masson Samares is the new album by the Colin Vallon Trio. Samares are seeds with a wing-like appendage that helps the wind spread them, as with maple or ash. Like winged fruits, the album’s songs also spread and develop, taking unexpected turns, as if they were suddenly caught by a gust of wind. They carry worlds full of possibilities, which the three musicians explore and hold together in a firm core. They interweave their unique personalities and weave a dense canopy of beautiful music. Deeply rooted yet branching outward, these songs develop sometimes gently, with the patience of growth, sometimes fiercely, in bursts of stormy energy. They speak of roots and seeds, of belonging and continuity. They shine in a warm light that casts long shadows. The Lausanne pianist Colin Vallon pursues, alongside two trio projects, a career as a composer and wrote the music for Martin Zimmermann’s pieces Eins, Zwei, Drei and Danse Macabre. He won 3rd prize at the Montreux International Jazz Piano Solo Competition and was nominated in 2016 for the Swiss Music Prize. Patrice Moret from Aigle is classically trained as a double bassist. He has recorded several albums, including with Thierry Lang, with whom he released an album on Bluenote. Since 2004 he has been a member of Colin Vallon’s trio. He is also a long-time member of Nicolas Masson’s quartet and Elina Duni’s quartet, with whom – as well as with Vallon – several albums have been made for ECM. Drummer Julian Sartorius is a recipient of the Swiss Music Prize. Until 2010 he was part of Sophie Hunger’s band, and for some years he has been touring internationally with her again. He was, among others, a member of Co Streiff’s group. In 2013 he founded the Sartorius Drum Ensemble (with Lionel Friedli, Peter Conradin Zumthor and Arno Troxler). He has also played with musicians such as Matthew Herbert, Sylvie Courvoisier and Fred Frith. A portrait of him was broadcast on SRF in 2023.
