Until only a hundred years ago, the public fountain played a much bigger role in the life of the city, as it was a central water supply point. The incomparably beautiful image of Bern’s medieval streets would be incomplete without the numerous fountains, whose coloured figures and column shafts enliven the grey of the long rows of house fronts to best effect.
