Which apps do you need for a Switzerland trip?

You are looking at a lake, a mountain railway and a walking trail. The useful question is not how many travel apps to download, but how you will choose your day, get there and get back.

For a Switzerland trip, start with tools for public transport and weather. Add a map app if you will hike, and a planning app for places to visit and activities to book. You can use these together rather than expecting one app to suit every journey.

Publisher disclosure: This guide is published by Swiss Activities, and includes our own app alongside other providers. We explain what each is useful for rather than declaring an overall winner.

Your main task An app to consider
Check train connections and manage transport tickets SBB Mobile
Explore destinations, plan day trips and book experiences Swiss Activities
Read detailed Swiss maps and prepare offline map sections swisstopo
Find signposted walking and other outdoor routes SwitzerlandMobility
Follow local forecasts and official natural-hazard warnings MeteoSwiss

Train travel: keep the journey itself easy

SBB Mobile provides timetable searches, ticket purchases and journey information, including notifications about delays and changes. It is useful when your priority is the next connection or a ticket you bought in the app.

Swiss Activities brings transport into day-trip planning: you can explore somewhere to visit, look up connections and buy available tickets. Our transport guide is also useful before you travel.

Check your connection again before departure. A timetable viewed while planning is not a promise that a particular train, boat or mountain railway will run unchanged on the day.

Rail passes: choose for your itinerary

An app does not make every rail pass the right purchase. Write down your likely travel days, journeys and mountain excursions first, then compare the relevant pass with individual tickets.

Use the Swiss Activities rail pass finder as a starting point. Review the current coverage, passenger details and conditions before buying.

The Swiss Travel Pass is designed for visitors whose permanent residence is outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Some panoramic-train reservations or supplements are separate, and mountain excursions have different coverage. A pass comparison should account for those details, not just the number of days you are staying.

Hiking: choose routes and maps for the walk

SwitzerlandMobility focuses on officially signposted routes and provides route descriptions for planning outdoor days. Its Plus subscription adds features including offline maps and personal tour planning; check which features require a subscription before relying on them.

The swisstopo app provides Switzerland's national maps, tour planning and recording. You can download map sections or maps along a route before losing reception.

Swiss Activities offers hike planning with elevation profiles and a 3D route preview. Our Switzerland hiking guide can help you find ideas. Whichever tool you use, include the journey to the start and the return connection in your plan. Downloaded maps do not update trail closures automatically.

Weather: check the place you are going

The MeteoSwiss app, published by the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, provides local forecasts, weather animations and federal natural-hazard warnings. You can subscribe to warnings for selected locations. There is also an iPhone and iPad version.

Look at your destination and the relevant altitude rather than relying only on your hotel's forecast. Keep an alternative plan for a wet day. Swiss Activities uses MeteoSwiss weather data to match the day trips on its map to the weather; the dedicated MeteoSwiss app is useful for examining weather and warning information directly.

Places to visit: turn ideas into a day

Swiss Activities is useful when you are deciding what to do: browse places and experiences on the map, save ideas and book available activities. You can combine a lakeside visit, a museum or a mountain excursion with the transport needed to reach it.

See the Swiss Activities app for its current features and downloads. Before booking, check the chosen date, meeting point, operating information and cancellation conditions. A place appearing on a map does not mean its attraction is open or its tickets are available today.

Practical questions

01Do I need all five apps?

No. For a city-and-train trip, transport and weather tools may be enough. For hiking, add the mapping or route-planning tool that fits your needs. Swiss Activities can help organize destinations and bookable experiences.

02Can I use them without mobile data?

Some functions work offline, but prepare them first. Download supported maps, confirm that your tickets open and check storage space. New forecasts, live connections and ticket purchases generally need an internet connection.

03Which app is best for hiking in Switzerland?

Choose by task: swisstopo for detailed maps, SwitzerlandMobility for signposted route discovery, or Swiss Activities for combining hike ideas with trip planning. Compare difficulty, elevation and return travel before setting off.

04Should I buy a pass before choosing my day trips?

Sketch your itinerary first. Then compare suitable passes and individual tickets using current terms. Your route, travel dates, age and planned mountain excursions matter more than a general recommendation.
