100 Years of the Art Fund of the Canton of Solothurn

In autumn 2026, the purchase of art by the Canton of Solothurn will mark its 100th anniversary. What began with a picture to decorate a government councillor’s office has grown into the cantonal art collection, with around 4000 works. The collection stands out for its breadth of supported art. It contains works by artists of regional and international importance. Many of these pictures are found in offices, corridors and meeting rooms throughout the cantonal administration, as well as in public buildings and museums. For once, selected examples are brought together in an exhibition at the museum and offer insight into developments, functions and aims of past cultural policy. At the same time, the presentation addresses questions about the current self-understanding of a cantonal collection.
