Heimatmuseum Rothrist

About this place

In a farmhouse dating from the 19th century, the house museum is set up. Across two floors, rooms furnished in a historical style tell of everyday life in the 19th and early 20th centuries, of school, of work in the home and of growing up in a village shaped by agriculture and home-based work. In the attic, the history of Rothrist is presented. Of particular note, and well documented, is the large emigration of 1855, when 12 per cent of the village population left Rothrist for America and had to leave, as there was indescribable poverty not only in Rothrist but also in Aargau. The background to this unique exodus is presented clearly.
