About this place

The Schulmuseum is in the Schulhaus Mühlebach in Amriswil, very close to Romanshorn on the Bodensee. The building – built in 1845/46 as a so-called «Piseebau», a structure made of unfired clay – is regarded as an important example from the early days of school buildings in the Thurgau. Under the guidance of the heritage conservation office, it was renovated and opened in 2002 as a supra-regional museum for school history and topics relating to Swiss school culture. The museum has various exhibition rooms, a historic classroom dating from around 1920, a workshop and studio room, a multifunctional seminar room and a school garden. Of more than 20'000 objects, around 13'000 are currently recorded in a database, which can be accessed online for research purposes and on request. Current information on changing and special exhibitions, workshops, events and publications is available on the website.
