Description
From Meiringen, you travel by the PostBus of route 161 (from Oberwald route 111, if you take the connection with a transfer in Oberwald). On your way to Airolo, you pass the Aare Gorge.
At the top at the Grimsel Pass, you marvel at the large Grimsel Lake, an artificial reservoir. Further south, you reach the Nufenen Pass, which at 2,478 meters above sea level is the highest pass in Switzerland. The journey ends in Airolo.
You can get off at any stop along the way and enjoy the views or hiking and biking routes. In this case, check the timetable so you know when you'll need to be ready at the stop for the next PostBus.

Swiss Activity Tip
Stopping at the Nufenen Pass summit is worthwhile. The mountain scenery appears very impressive from the pass at 2,478 meters above sea level. In addition to the Bernese Alps, you can also see the Gries Glacier, which extends over an area of 5 square kilometres.
Bicycle
If you want to take your bike on the post bus, please observe the following regulations:
- Check in the online timetable or in the app whether an R with bike symbol is displayed
- In this case, please buy a reservation ticket for your bike alongside your regular ticket
Travelling with a wheelchair
- Postbuses are generally equipped for wheelchair transport. The door for wheelchair access has a corresponding symbol.
- The Postbus between Meiringen and Airolo features a built-in lift operated by the driver (no prior booking needed). This is marked as HL in the SBB timetable.
Travelling with your dog
- Carrying small dogs up to 30 cm is free if they stay in a transport container throughout the journey. This must be tucked under your seat.
- Dogs without a container and all dogs over 30 cm shoulder height require a valid dog ticket: half-price for second class or the minimum fare (dog day pass, dog pass). They must be seated under the seat so as not to block the passage for other passengers.
