Sils in the Engadine

Sils im Engadin is a village in the Maloja region. It is situated between the Silvaplanersee and the Silsersee. The picturesque Lake Sils is surrounded by majestic mountains and is ideal for hiking, cycling and water sports. The district of Sils Maria is popular for winter sports. Quite a few houses in Sils stand out for their sgraffito decorations. The scratching technique dates back to the 17th century, when it was also begun to quarry the "fexer plates" in the rear Fex valley for the construction of stoves and the covering of the house roofs. The house where Friedrich Nietzsche lived and worked is now a museum.
