About this place

Up to the Frümsel – Hike Description You simply have to visit this spectacular peak! For one thing, because the view down to Lake Walen, 1,600 meters below, feels majestic, and for another, because the vista from the Frümsel to the other six Churfirsten peaks—as the photos reveal—is truly one-of-a-kind. The day’s hike gets off to a pleasantly adventurous start as we ride the open-air wooden cable car from Starkenbach, saving ourselves the first 600 meters of elevation gain. What an airy—yet very safe—experience. We’ll definitely have plenty of energy to spare later on the trail to the rather steep summit. Once we arrive at the mountain station, we marvel at the beautiful Toggenburg mountain flora, and the sight of the jagged Churfirsten peaks motivates us even more. In the first quarter of an hour, we take some time to explore a prehistoric cave—the famous Wildmannlisloch—and learn about the history of this magical place. A headlamp can definitely come in handy for this brief visit. The trail to the Frümsel—arguably the steepest, though not the longest, of the Churfirsten peaks—feels very pleasant at first and runs easily through lush alpine meadows and secluded pastures. The final 300 meters of elevation gain up a narrow trail to the Frümsel, however, are quite a challenge—those who’ve always been looking for this particular challenge will be fully rewarded here. The trail isn’t dangerous anywhere in dry conditions; a section secured with a wire rope helps us get over a ledge. And the reward at the summit is simply breathtakingly beautiful. You won’t forget this panoramic view anytime soon. We’ll then head back down the same entertaining trail—hiking poles are definitely highly recommended for this tour. This hike isn’t long at all, but it’s incredibly exciting.
