Martigny

Martigny is a town on the Rhone plain in the Lower Valais. Several canals drain the formerly marshy area. Martigny lies on the lower reaches of the Dranse and is framed by mountains, some of which are very steep, reaching about 1800 meters above sea level. The town has several sights to offer. A Roman amphitheater dates back to the beginning of the 2nd century and is a pure earthen structure. Today it is used for open-air cinema and cow fights. The ruins of La Bâtiaz Castle can be visited as well as the Barryland St. Bernard Museum.

“The castle was much bigger inside than expected, with amazing history and stunning artefacts. It was a great time of year to visit, not too crowded, and the whole experience was interesting. Walking where people walked hundreds of years ago felt humbling.”
