Description

The funicular runs from Biel up to the Magglingen mountain station. The journey lasts about 10 minutes. During the ride, views of the Weissenstein, the Alpine range, and Lake Murten unfold. \n\nUpon arrival in Magglingen, you can visit the observation terrace of the Federal Office of Sport. The mountain station is also a starting point for various hikes in the surrounding area. \n\n+ Valley station: Biel/Bienne at approx. 435 m a.s.l. \n+ Mountain station: Magglingen/Macolin at approx. 873 m a.s.l.

Magglingen - Twannberg - Twannbach Gorge - Twann\n+ Length: approx. 10 km \n+ Elevation: approx. 102 m ↑, 545 m ↓ \n+ Time: approx. 2:45 hours \n+ Difficulty: Easy \n+ The hike starts along the old spa-house path and through the Nidau forest. After a dense conifer forest you reach Twannberg. From here it continues over cobblestones (an old cart road), which can be slippery in rain. The increasingly narrow Twannbach Gorge is damp and partly secured. A staircase leads steeply down to Twann.\n\nMagglingen - Experiential Path - Restaurant End of the World\n+ Elevation: approx. 86 m↑, \n+ Time: approx. 30 min \n+ Difficulty: Easy\n+ The experiential path begins at the summit station of the Magglingen funicular and is a stroller-friendly footpath. It traverses the grounds of the Federal Office of Sport (BASPO). The path conveys interesting insights from the world of sport. It presents well-known personalities and their sporting achievements. Not least, the path invites participation in various movement tasks, a competition, and exciting sports puzzles.\n+ Free parking is located directly in front of the station building. Please note that during the reconstruction at the valley station until the end of 2025, parking in front of the building is not available.\n+ Alternative parking options are available at the Museum Parking Garage nearby. It is located on Rüschlistrasse and is about a one-minute walk from the valley station.

Traveling with a wheelchair or stroller

  • The funicular itself is wheelchair-accessible. The cabins accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. \n+ The valley station will be redesigned to be wheelchair-accessible by the end of 2025. Until then it will not be accessible.\n+ At the mountain station there is a wheelchair-accessible toilet.\n+ From the Magglingen mountain station, a short, paved path leads directly to the restaurant.

Traveling with a dog

  • Dogs under 30 cm at shoulder height may travel in the carrier (e.g., basket or bag) for free.\n+ Larger dogs or dogs without a carrier require a ticket at half the price of a regular fare.\n+ Must be kept on a leash for the entire journey. In some cases a muzzle may be required.
