Gächlingen

Gächlingen belongs to the canton of Schaffhausen and is considered the oldest settlement in Switzerland. Settlements dating back 7000 years have been discovered here. Gächlingen lies at the foot of the Hallau mountain on the northern edge of the Swiss Klettgau region. The village is located within the Schaffhausen Regional Nature Park. You can go hiking, explore the park by bike and try out one of the 70 barbecue sites in the park. Or you can go on a horse-drawn carriage ride. Regional weekly markets, wine tastings and handicraft courses also provide interesting variety.

“The castle was much bigger inside than expected, with amazing history and stunning artefacts. It was a great time of year to visit, not too crowded, and the whole experience was interesting. Walking where people walked hundreds of years ago felt humbling.”
