Om dette sted

Migration and tourism have been closely intertwined for over 150 years. With early Alpine tourism, a new economic and living space emerges between Graubünden, Vorarlberg and southern Tyrol. It is carried by people who leave their home for a season or for good in order to open up new fields of work on building sites, in hotels or in independent professions. The exhibition places their life stories at its centre. In six separate houses, they speak for themselves: a construction worker from the Non Valley, who founds a building firm in Vorarlberg; an assistant cook from Siena, who works his way up to head chef through twenty hotels across Europe; a waitress from the canton of Zürich, who records her experiences in a little book; a Jewish photographer from Hungary, who opens a studio in Meran; a young ski pioneer, who leads the first ski course in the Arlberg; and a couple of bath attendants from Meran, for whom the First World War denies the summer season in Engadin. They tell of departure and arrival, of hardship and opportunity between St. Moritz, Lech and Meran. Their life paths show how cross-border mobility shaped the Alpine region, connected it and led it into modernity.
