Om dette sted

In the Sarganserland, Flums, Mels and Walenstadt are regarded as the strongholds of mask carvers. But this tradition, which is over 200 years old, is still maintained today in other municipalities in the region too. Around 200 historical and contemporary wooden masks are on display in the museum and present the region’s typical customs. The Sarganserländer Maskenmuseum was created in 2006 as part of the 50th anniversary of the Talgemeinschaft Sarganserland Walensee, in the basement rooms of Flums town hall. The exhibition is divided into three rooms. The region room contains typical masks from all eight Sarganserland municipalities. Here, a video show расскаnarrates the creation of a single wooden mask. In the mask history room, you can see historical masks and valuable rarities, as well as the carving tools needed to make them. The third room, the mask room, is dedicated to the more recent masks by contemporary carvers.
