The aesthetics of totalitarian monumental buildings fascinate and repel at the same time. Their force serves to demonstrate power as well as to seal off and intimidate. In stone, concrete and symmetry, a collective self-assurance takes shape that surpasses and absorbs the individual. That is precisely where their ambivalence lies: the sublime gives power a beautiful, almost seductive mask — and makes it all the more frightening. The discussion reveals the range of typologies and design strategies in totalitarian architecture.
