Chillon Castle is the most famous castle in the area - and the most visited historic building in Switzerland, with nearly 350,000 visitors each year! As you walk through the castle's thick walls and richly decorated rooms, you'll feel like you've been transported back in time. Especially worth seeing are the Gothic cellar vault and the chapel
The castle was first mentioned in the 12th century. However, the rock on which it is located was inhabited by people as early as the Bronze Age. Chillon means something like "rocky plateau". In later centuries, it served as a ruling residence for the Counts of Savoy and the Vaudois, among others. These different ruling families and epochs have left their traces. You can admire a large collection of old weapons and armor
Some pieces are over 500 years old! In addition, Chillon Castle also exhibits numerous archaeological finds: Coins and arrowheads, toys, pottery and knives. In the prison of the castle you will come across ancient wall paintings, some of which are over 700 years old.
